Elul is the 6th month of the hebraic calendar, and it is a month where we find repentance, forgiveness, mercy, preparation an invitation to intimacy and favor.
The month of Elul follows the two months where Israel committed two “great sins” - the golden calf in Tammuz and unbelief in Av. Yet we see here in Elul that when they repented of those things, that the Lord not only extended mercy to them, but also renewed His covenant and promised to move forward with them!
This is the month where the King is in the field! In ancient times all year long if you wanted to see the king, you would have to go to the palace, be dressed a certain way, follow all the palace protocol go into the throneroom. But one month a year, the king come out of his palace, and would set up a royal tent in a field. All who wanted to see him were welcomed, and the announcement was made: the King is in the field!”
But we're not in ancient times - so where exactly is our field? Well it’s where we work and live, it's where we commute, the fields that we frequent in our everyday lives. God wants to meet you right there in those fields! He wants to bring His manifested Presence right into the middle of where you are! What would it look like for the King to show in the field of your job? During your commute on the subway or picking your child up from school?
The “field” is also in your battlefield! Did you know that when Israel was in the wilderness and sent out the 12 spies.. they were in the month of Av. They chose unbelief, and stayed in that cycle for another 40 years. BUT had they chosen faith and pressed thru into the promised land in God’s timing - it would have been in the month of Elul, where the King is in the field! God would have been in the field waiting for them and met them in that battlefield! They would have faced the giants with the King in their field along with the host of angel armies partnering with them! The King is in your field today - so approach Him and receive favor! Call out to Him and receive deliverance from every enemy!!
Elul is pictured in the earthly ministry of Jesus - John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” The word “dwelling” is actually the word for “tent” or “tabernacle” which means that the King of the universe left His place in the heavens and came here in our “fields” in a tent of mortal flesh!
What can you expect when The King is in the field? We see scripturally 3 Biblical Patterns for Elul
This is the month to find your place in the order of the camp - Gad was a tribe who knew how to organize a troop of men. So this is a month to get our spiritual house in order and aligned with the body. Gad also means “good fortune” so we can expect good fortune with the Lord as we partner with Him to get our spiritual house in order.
Many people miss their window of opportunity to find their place and wind up wandering. God can bring us to the window of opportunity, but mistrust can keep us from connecting. Satan will produce mistrust in us that prevents us from connecting. We all go thru things, but if you do not handle mistrust correctly, you cannot connect and before long you will end up in your own camp all alone. If you have developed a pattern of isolation, you have a root of rejection and mistrust, which will prevent you from coming into the fullness of the corporate dynamic of Passover in your life.
This is the month to evaluate have I grown spiritually, or am I stuck repeating the same patterns? What needs to be fixed? Am I trusting and crowning God as King of my life? Or am allowing mistrust to keep me wandering?
How we posture ourselves this month will set the course for our next year. We see that even in the hebrew letter for this month "Yod."
Yod means “God has appointed mercy from His hand” It is a picture of mercy from God’s hand and humility, of how he wants us to position ourselves this month and how he will extend His hand of mercy. Ask yourself - is there any part of my life that I have not completely put into God’s hands? Look at the cares and anxieties that have drained your strength, and cast them totally on Him!
Elul also forms the beautiful acrostic that translates to “I am my Beloved's and He is mine” because this is the month where as God comes near to you, He is yearning for your heart and extending an invitation to a deeper intimacy this month. Will you answer the call to meet with Him? Your invitation awaits.. You have an appointment with The King!
